I started yoga because my back was hurting, I carried on because my back stopped hurting and then so did my knees. Since I started teaching yoga in 1994 I've found yoga like this is useful for any number of things.
Eventually I found that with a lot of work on the physical postures my mind had become a little quieter, and now I sit and breathe quietly every day. This is a picture of me doing just that on the roof of St Peter's in Rome where the lift arrives. My family went on to climb the dome and then came back to find me surrounded by other tourists - when I first closed my eyes I was completely alone.
My family had come back to get me because it turned out that the only way down was up first - a terrifying 15 minutes followed - good thing I had got so calm. Sitting and breathing has become an important part of my teaching in recent years.
Now I don't know if what I'm doing in this picture looks impressive to you - it's not the best backbend in the world - but to me it's almost miraculous! I never did this stuff when I was a child - always too busy talking or reading. Now I can stand on my head too. Tons of stuff I still can't do, but that's half the fun.
I teach and practise a wide range of yoga things, most not as dramatic but useful and fun.
There is information about my yoga qualifications and the styles I teach on the FAQ page.
